If you’re suffering right now from lower jaw pain or have had acute or chronic jaw pain episodes in the past, you may or may not have sought medical attention. Lower jaw pain can be caused by a few things including arthritis, fractures, dislocations, whiplash injuries and structural issues in the jaw that you were born with.

Do any of these symptoms sound like the kind of lower jaw pain you’re having? Clicking or popping jaw, sore jaw, jaw ache, locked jaw, clenching jaw or does it feel like a dislocated jaw? If so, your jaw and jaw pain can be treated and possibly cured and most of the time naturally. Of course removing the cause is the most important part once it’s recognized or diagnosed.

If you’re wondering what kind of jaw pain is linked with heart problems is the most important thing to remember about lower jaw pain is that it can be caused by heart problems and you want to make sure it isn’t related to your heart first of all. If it is you want to seek treatment immediately. You don’t want to wait around. This can be serious and a heart attack may be looming. If you have eliminated heart issues as a cause you can review the above list and see if any of that could be the cause.

If not the most common cause would be what people commonly call a TMJ problem. Pain in the lower jaw is usually due to temporomandibular joint or TMJ pain as it is called. These joints are located on both sides of the head just in front of your ears. There are other related problems in these areas but all fall under the category of TMJ disorders.

Most TMJ problems happen due to physical stress or sometimes emotional stress on the structures that support the joints. It can be one-sided or the lower jaw pain can be felt on both sides, to varying degrees of pain. The structures involved include the cartilage that connects the joint, muscles in the face, neck and jaw along with ligaments, nerves, blood vessels and teeth in the lower jaw area.

Some of the structural changes can happen if you have an overbite. Or get partial denture or full dentures that don’t change your overbite – which is hard to do. If you clench or grind your teeth at night or throughout the day this can pose serious stresses on the tempormandibualr joints (TMJ). This clenching causes a lot of stress on the jaw. Even poor posture can influence the muscles in the TMJ area. If you’re sitting at a computer all day long and not in an ergonomic fashion you may unwittingly put a lot of stress on the lower jaw and it may cause you pain then or later.

Other factors that might make TMJ symptoms worse are stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Complicating factors could be you develop headaches, toothaches or earaches caused by the lower jaw referring pain to those areas.

Once you have eliminated the possibility of heart-related issues and decided on whether your lower jaw pain is caused by, arthritis, fractures, structural problems, dislocations, whiplash or TMJ or a combination there are many natural approaches you can take.

You don’t have to suffer with TMJ or any other jaw pain. I suffered in the past too but I no longer have any TMJ or arthritis problems. Identifying the problem and being properly diagnosed by your doctor is the most important part. But try natural approaches to arthritis, TMJ and lower jaw pain treatment first efore resorting to invasive treatments.

What is TMJ

TMJ is a disorder of the temporomandibular joint that causes inflammation and incredible pain of the join. This pain can radiate up into the ear, face and neck, causing tooth pain, headaches and stiff and sore jaw muscles making it hard to chew or open the mouth.

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. This is located right below the ear. The TM joint is the most complex joint in the human body because it’s the only joint that moves up, down and left to right. Because of this, this joint can become weak and damaged leading to this disorder that causes extreme pain.

TMJ starts with lower jaw pain, and be caused by many different reasons. Some of these are trauma (car accident, a punch to the jaw, etc…) to the joint, extended amount of stress (stress causes us to clinch the jaw) or hereditary causes such as arthritis, etc… No matter what caused it for you, the pain is all the same. It’s hard to sleep, eat, or even be happy!

There are many ways to cure your lower jaw pain, but some are more involved than others. If you have extreme cases of TMJ, you can look at surgery, although I wouldn’t recommend this. This surgery can cost $50,000 and most insurance won’t cover it. Besides, who wants to have their jaw broken and reconstructed?

I am a long time TMJ sufferer that has found some exercises to do at home that builds up the weak and damaged joint so that I no longer have lower jaw pain for longer than a few minutes at most.

Looking for treatment of your TMJ disorder in Campbell River? Read on to find out more on this painful syndrome and what you can do about it no matter where you are in the world…

TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a general term for jaw joint discomfort, pain and inflammation. This disorder can be extremely painful and can disrupt daily life if the condition is bad enough and goes untreated as it can lead to immobility in the jaw which can disrupt eating, speaking and facial movements. The outright symptoms of TMJ are swelling of the side of the face, discomfort, pain, lack of mobility in the jaw, headaches and ear pain.

Because TMJ crosses over a number of different medical disciplines, including neurology, oral and general medical care, there can be a lack of specific diagnosis and you may feel like you aren’t getting the answer or TMJ treatment you seek.

The causes of TMJ are wide spread and to determine the cause for your specific case a doctor should work with you on uncovering what is going on. The causes could be anything from teeth grinding to genetics or dental procedures. Most causes can be treated and with pain management and TMJ treatment a resolution can be found for your symptoms.

TMJ treatment can come in many forms and with proper treatment you can find a way to get back to daily life with comfort and productivity. Depending on the cause of the TMJ, like bad dental work or deterioration of the jaw bones, then restorative surgery may be required to relieve the pain and correct the situation. With something as simple as teeth grinding there are devices that can be worn at night to stop this habit and help restore your jaw joints to the health they are supposed to be in. The initial treatment your doctor will likely use is going to be pain management. This will help to lessen your pain level and increase mobility while searching for and treating the cause of your TMJ symptoms.

TMJ treatment on a long-term basis will be the treatment of the cause with a pain management and mobility plan. This plan could include surgery or other procedures depending on the results of the testing done by your doctor in partnership with your dental care provider to find the cause of your TMJ. When investigated and treated properly TMJ symptoms can come to an end and be managed effectively. The key is to notify your doctor immediately upon noticing the symptoms and experiencing pain and discomfort. Then you can be well on your way to a good recovery and get back to life as usual.

It is estimated that 30% of the population suffer from TMJ dysfunction or from one of the many symptoms that a problem with the jaw can create. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is where the jaw bone joins the skull. Problems or dysfunction of this joint can result in jaw pain, jaw clicking, headaches, sinus problems and even loss of hearing! Many people suffer needlessly for years, seeking opinion after opinion, not knowing how to address this painful and problematic condition.

Jessie’s story started just that way. When she came to our office, she had been suffering with jaw pain and neck stiffness for many years. She told me it was terrible to wake up not knowing if her jaw would lock up and cause a migraine all day long again. You see, she had stopped taking the various pain killers her doctor had prescribed. They never really worked and she was tired of the years of "fogginess" her medications had caused.

What were her doctors missing? Why does the TMJ pose such a problem for so many? The causes of a TMJ dysfunction are almost always physical. What does that mean? Well, a comprehensive approach to TMJ must include a look at the tracking of the jaw, the muscles that act upon the jaw, the disc that helps the jaw glide against the skull, and the nerves that control the muscles of the jaw. Lifestyle changes are often in order as well.

What causes tracking disorders? One way is with direct trauma to the jaw, knocking it out of alignment and causing all kinds of trouble. Auto accidents, sports injuries, and blows to the face are common ways the jaw can be knocked out of alignment. Left untreated, the misaligned jaw can literally start to carve a new, misaligned path for itself.

An imbalance in the muscles that act on the jaw is another way to cause TMJ dysfunction. The jaw, like all joints in the body, is moved and stabilized by muscles. When these muscles aren’t functioning properly, the jaw will not move properly, and the joint will start a degenerative process that will not just go away. Arthritic changes and problems with the disc often result from such imbalances.

The most common, and often over-looked, cause of TMJ is a problem with the neck. When the top bones of the neck go out of alignment, they place pressure on the nerves that go to the head and face, causing problems such as: headaches, ringing in the ears, dizzy spells, sinus trouble, and TMJ.

The problem with Jessie’s jaw was a combination of all these things. She was treated with manipulation of her jaw, to help align it for proper tracking, myofascial release to the muscles that act on her jaw, relaxation techniques to help her stop clenching, a splint to help her relax her jaw at night, and most importantly, she was given chiropractic care to address the problems in her neck that were affecting her jaw. Your chiropractor will take a health history, do an examination of the nerves that most commonly cause TMJ and examine your spine to see if those nerves are impinged by misaligned vertebrae. When indicated, spinal x-rays will be taken to see exactly where the spinal bones are misaligned and how to re-align the spine to correct the problem.

Chiropractic adjustments can correct the cause by re-aligning the vertebrae to their normal position with gentle exercises to strengthen to new and proper positioning. If you would like to leave the pain and the drugs behind, chiropractic offers a promising solution by dealing with the cause of TMJ.

Although TMJ disorder is not often discussed, it is quite a common disorder among both women and men. TMJ involves the temporomandibular joint which is the joint connecting hinge mechanism between the base of the skull (temporal bone) and the lower jaw (mandible). Patient with TMJ disorder have difficulty opening their mouth completely because such a motion is extremely painful for them.

TMJ disorder can cause headaches, earaches, popping sounds in the jaw and other types of facial discomfort. Surgery is recommended only when a precise cause of the particular disorder has been identified and conservative medical options have failed.

There are three types of TMJ surgery that people suffering form this condition can seek to reduce the joint pain in their mouths. Arthroscopic surgery is a form of treatment using a small arthroscope (camera) and instruments. Disk displacement and joint adhesions can be treated using this method. Another option is arthoplasty which involves accessing the temporomandibular joint through an incision in a skin crease in front of the ear. This open joint procedure is most commonly used to repair the disk or strengthen a hypermobile (loose) joint.

People plagued by extremely severe jaw pain might need the third type of treatment which is total joint replacement. This treatment is only recommended for those whose condition has not gotten better after other surgical methods. Only the most severe and chronic conditions should be treated this way.

In this procedure, the deformed or degenerated joint is removed and replaced with a TMJ prosthesis custom-designed for each patient. For those suffering from severe TMJ these procedures can cause much improved lifestyle and positive changes,

Emory oral surgeons are among the small number of surgeons in Georgia with experience in this procedure. Specifically, Dr. Bouloux of Emory is a surgeon that focuses mainly on jaw disorders and treatment. His areas of specialty include pathophysiology and surgical management of temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction, surgical management of mandibular fractures with particular emphasis on the use of small bone plates, and pathophysiology and management of bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaws. If you are living with TMJ you should know that treatment and surgery exist and can vastly improve your condition.

For millions of people with mysterious pain of the jaw region, there may be help on the way.
Many times, one does not realize at first that they are experiencing TMJ jaw pain. This pain is usually focused around the joint, but the pain can be located throughout the face or head. Commonly, a person diagnosed with TMJ pain was originally seeking pain relief from headaches.

If you are experiencing TMJ syndrome, it is always a good idea to talk with a doctor or a dentist to see what the best treatment option is. There are things that can be done that will quickly relieve the pain without high costs or invasive procedures.

Often, TMJ pain is most effectively treated when several TMJ treatments are used. One good option is to talk to your doctor about your TMJ pain and they will have you wear a mouth appliance called a bite guard. This bite guard will help to reduce the grinding and clenching that is going on in your jaw. Unfortunately these gurads can be quite expensive not to mention the cost of the dental office visit.

You could combine the use of the bite guard with some at-home TMJ exercises to help your jaw alignment. TMJ exercises will help to relax the muscles and train them to move in the proper way.

It is natural for the body to go through some wear and tear as we get older. Many of my patients feel these effects in their joints and bones. They come to me frequently for treatment of arthritis in the back or legs, but I don’t get as many complaints about jaw pain. This may be due to the fact that people who experience facial soreness or difficulty chewing do not realize that weak joints-not simple old age-are to blame.

These painful joints in your jaw are known as TMJ Syndrome. TMJ refers to temporomandibular joints which are the lower part of the jaw to the sides of the head, just in front of the ears. Approximately one third of the population has experienced some level of TMJ, but extreme cases are rare. It is important to be aware of the symptoms and causes of TMJ so you can recognize this condition before it escalates and severely impacts your life.

Know the Causes and Symptoms

Like all the joints in your body, the TMJ can succumb to osteoarthritis, the wearing down of joints due to aging. Rheumatoid arthritis can also be the cause of TMJ, as this inflammatory disease may erode cartilage and bone, weakening the joint. Often, a dentist will be the first to diagnose a patient with TMJ. Your dentist is most likely to notice the effects of grinding and clenching, which often occur during sleep. Your dentist may also notice if your bite alignment is off or if you have a weak bite. All these things may be factors in TMJ syndrome.

My older patients are not the only ones who experience TMJ. An injury to the jaw can cause TMJ symptoms that recur if untreated. Stress is also one of the leading causes, and it can strike at any age. Stress tends to cause the grinding and clenching that weaken and strain the jaw. If you are able to detect that you are grinding during the night (maybe your spouse has noticed) I would suggest first trying some stress reduction techniques like therapy, massage or meditation.

The most common TMJ symptom is pain in the jaw area. You may also have sore shoulders, neck or back. Pain when chewing food and trouble swallowing are irritating, but common signs. You may hear clicking and popping sounds when you talk or chew due to improper jaw alignment.

This faulty alignment can also cause swelling of your face, headaches, dizziness and nausea. Due to proximity, the TMJ joints can have an effect on the ears, causing ringing or hearing problems. In extreme cases of TMJ syndrome, the jaw can become locked, in which case you should immediately seek treatment.

Managing Your Flare-Ups

TMJ symptoms can be relieved relatively quickly, provided you practice good habits of self-care. If you are prone to TMJ pain, avoid chewing gum and break the habit of chewing on fingernails or pens. When symptoms flare, your goal should be to give your jaw a much-needed rest. This means switching to soft foods, supporting your jaw with the back of your hand when yawning and relieving pressure with a neck support pillow or a rolled up towel.

You can reduce the risk of jaw pain everyday by having good posture. When sitting at your desk, make sure your chin does not jut forward. If you also experience back pain, a chiropractor may be able to correct misaligned joints in your spine and pelvis, as well as the TMJ.

Other natural alternative treatments for TMJ include acupuncture, which can reduce pain and relieve stress. Naprapathy is a system of manipulating damaged connective tissue, which cause structural imbalance in the body that irritates the nervous system and causes pain. This treatment may be a solution if your TMJ is caused by an injury that has damaged your musculoskeletal alignment.

With so many avenues of relief to explore, I know that none of my patients need be subjected to chronic suffering. Finding the cause of your TMJ pain and experimenting with the techniques and treatments outlined above will put you on the road to a pain free life too!

TMJ refers to the Temporomandibular Joints. The joints that connects the lower jaw to the skull. While the abbreviation TMJ refers specifically to these joints, it is commonly used to refer to disorders that are associated with the joints. The disorder is actually called TMD, but since it is more commonly known as TMJ, that is the term we will use here.

People who suffer from TMJ disorders often experience a difficulty in biting or chewing, and possibly a clicking sound while chewing. Other symptoms may include a reduced ability to open the mouth, jaw pain, headaches, and earaches. Many of these symptoms are caused by the effects of physical and emotional stress. Stress can cause a person to clench the jaws and grind the teeth, both during waking hours and while asleep. This clenching and grinding can result in contracted muscles and pinched nerves in the jaw, neck, and head, leading to headaches, toothaches, and earaches.

Prevention methods for TMJ include relaxation techniques to reduce your overall stress level. Avoid chewing gum or eating foods that are difficult to chew. Get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of water everyday. And always try to maintain a good posture, both sitting and standing.

To self-treat your TMJ, try massaging the affected muscles. Gently rub all of the muscles of the face, shoulders, and back of the neck. Press on the muscles to identify painful points. Then massage the painful spots with slow, short strokes. Do this several times a day until the affected muscles are no longer painful when pressed.

With extreme cases of TMJ, mouthguards can be effective at reducing the clenching and grinding while you sleep. This is an option you can discuss with your dentist. There are also some natural exercises that you can do using the jaw, tongue, and throat. These exercises have been known to greatly reduce, and even eliminate altogether, the symptoms of TMJ.

Most of us can go through our entire lives without giving much thought to the smaller parts of our bodies that we use all the time. One of these parts is the temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) or the joint that helps your jaw move. Most of us don’t spend much time (if any time at all) thinking about this. In fact most of us don’t start thinking about our bodies until something starts to hurt. Of course, once something starts to hurt, then it is all that we tend to think about. The same is true for TMJ irritation. And when this occurs, you might need to see a doctor for TMJ diagnosis and treatment. A professional diagnosis is the best way to figure out what’s really the problem and treat it appropriately.

TMJ disorders and problems affect roughly ten percent of the population at least once in their lifetimes. Usually, however, it is a small problem that can easily be cured with some preventative treatments. Sometimes, unfortunately, the problems happen because of serious jaw disorders and once in a while these problems require corrective surgery. The good news is that this only happens to a very small percentage of the people who experience problems with their TMJ.

One of the best ways to ensure that you are able to properly treat a TMJ disorder is to recognize the symptoms associated with it and know when to see your physician and dentist. While the pain could be localized to your actual joint, it is possible for it to radiate to other places on your face and up to your ear. Some people hear clicking while they chew or talk but that isn’t a definite symptom of a TMJ disorder. Sometimes it may also cause headaches or an uneven bite (which can cause problems with chewing).

When you visit your doctor and dentist to have a TMJ disorder diagnosed, you will go through a series of tests. Your doctor will start by having you move your jaw in different directions while he or she listens for any noises and feeling for any odd movements that the joint might be making. Some doctors and dentists will analyze your bite by having you bite down on a piece of wax. This will help them see how your teeth come together when you bite. Lastly they might do a series of x-rays or other procedures that will help them see exactly how your jaw is set and identify any problems that could be contribute to TMJ disorder.

Typically, these disorders are easily treated with simple stress management. This is because most are caused by repetitive motions like chewing or teeth grinding. You might also need some dental or orthodontic treatment to solve the problems and treat the disorder. There are also some other good resources that are available to solve the problem yourself that have proven to be effective and less expensive. Whatever your treatment plans, remember that all of the treatment you do is to increase the health of your TMJ joint.

TMJ refers to the tempromandibular joints, which are the joints of the jaw that connect the lower jaw bone (mandible) to the skull. These joints allow us to open and close our mouths, chew our food, and speak to one another (or ourselves). A TMJ disorder is any condition which interferes with these actions. Teeth grinding, teeth and jaw clenching, and locked jaw are some examples of conditions which relate to TMJ disorders.

TMJ disorders are sometimes difficult to diagnose, as there are many different causes for these conditions. TMJ disorders are most commonly caused by muscle tension in the jaw, perhaps due to increased stress and anxiety, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or excessive chewing. Some other habits may be linked to TMJ disorders, such as consistently sleeping on one side of the jaw, chewing a lot of gum, or overextension of the jaw.

Other causes of TMJ disorders may be misaligned jaw joints or teeth, either due to structural problems with the jaw or teeth (such as a birth defect or scar tissue), or due to an injury to the jaw or surrounding areas. Other conditions such as arthritis may also lead to TMJ disorders.

If left untreated, these disorders can lead to headaches, earaches, joint and muscle pain (especially in the face, neck, and shoulders), loss of sleep, locked jaw, difficulty opening and closing the mouth, a clicking sound in the jaw, and/or limited movement of the head and neck.

Many people experience some of these problems and, most of the time, minor problems with the TMJ will correct themselves over time. They may reappear down the road, but the condition will not normally get any worse. However, some people suffer chronically from TMJ disorders, and must receive some type of treatment to deal with the pain and discomfort they may experience.

One of the best treatment options for teeth grinding , clenching, and other TMJ disorders are the use of dental mouth guards or splints. These custom-made guards are provided by your dentist and are used to relieve tension on the jaw during sleep. They help prevent teeth grinding and, if used regularly, can help curtail these nocturnal habits. Two common types of these guards are full upper mouth guards, which fit over all of the upper teeth, or NTIs, which are worn around only the top front teeth and have a high success rate stopping clenching.

Other methods to help treat TMJ disorders are available, and the best method really depends on the exact cause/s of the disorder. If high stress or anxiety levels are to blame, then stress management techniques may be the best line of defense. If the problem is due to structural problems with the teeth or jaw, then dental adjustments may bring these problems to an end. No matter what the cause, applying soothing heat to the area is often helpful, as well. Consult your dentist to find out what steps can be taken to help treat any TMJ disorders you may be suffering from.
